She Knows Him Now

He never really knew his father…

Left his mother when he was only two…

His prospects in life seemed limited…

But his mom did the best she could do…

His clothes were mostly hand me downs…

He lived above his grandpa’s Irish bar…

It seemed he was dealt a losing hand…

No one expected him to go very far…

But he was a pretty nice young fellow…

And he made good grades throughout school…

No one seemed to notice him that much…

And he appeared to be anything but cool…

He excelled in both math and science…

And he liked history and geography, too…

His teachers saw that he had promise…

Encouraged him to do the best he could do…

While he passed his classes with flying colors…

He never really found a good friend…

There was one girl that caught his eye…

But she never noticed as he was part of the blend…

It was at the end of his senior year…

When he eventually made his presence known…

He mustered up all the nerve he could find…

To finally called the girl on the phone…

He invited her to his senior prom…

She replied “Why would I go with you?”

As if she was somehow far superior…

A somewhat shallow point of view…

You see, he wasn’t very popular…

He didn’t own a big fancy sports car…

There wasn’t much going on for this kid…

She said “I don’t even know who you are!”

As he hung up the phone feeling dejected…

Telling himself he didn’t want to go anyway…

His grandfather hollered up the stairs from the bar…

“A letter from Yale arrived earlier today…”

He had been waiting to hear from Yale…

It was his first and only college of choice…

Running down the stairs and forgetting the girl…

He was hoping for a reason to rejoice…

Cautiously, he opened up the envelope…

As he read, his eyes filled with tears…

Not only has he been accepted to Yale…

But he was offered a scholarship for all four years…

The word spread quickly around his high school…

Suddenly, he became the boy to be known…

It seemed everyone wanted to be his friend…

For once, he no longer felt he was alone…

It was only a few weeks before the prom…

His new friends wondered who was his date…

Then, one day, that same girl walked up to him…

And asked him to take her, if it wasn’t too late…

The lenses through which one sees…

Often shifts as one’s attitude rearranges…

Always better to see the good in others…

As one’s perspective so often changes…
